Emotional intelligence is the ability to recognize, manage, and respond effectively to emotions in oneself and others. It is important for developing and maintaining good interpersonal relationships and for success in the workplace, especially in jobs involving management, leadership, or interacting effectively with people. We will be carefully reading and discussing the 25th anniversary edition of Daniel Goleman’s groundbreaking book on this topic, while also drawing on more recent research that helps elucidate how emotional intelligence works.
