Course Leader Bio

I was born in Baltimore Maryland December 31, 1936. I matriculated at Williams College (1954-1958) where I was a junior Phi Beta Kappa and graduated cum laude.  I graduated from the University of Maryland Medical School in 1962 summa cum laude, the class valedictorian. After serving as an intern and resident in Medicine at the Boston City Hospital. I served in the US Army (1964-1966). My Neurology residency was on the Harvard Neurological Unit at the Boston City Hospital (1966-1969). I was a Stroke Fellow at Massachusetts General Hospital (1969-1970). Since then I have been in academic medicine in leadership positions at the U of Chicago, Tufts, and Harvard. I now am Professor of Neurology at Harvard Medical School where I still practice Neurology at Beth Israel Deaconess Medica Center and teach. During my medical career I have had considerable experience with lay audiences in small and large groups. I am the author or editor of 52 books, mostly on aspects of stroke and other brain conditions, over 750 articles and chapters in medical journals and books. I live in Brookline with my wife Brenda.
