Course Description:

Freedom of Speech is under assault! Or so we hear in the press. But what is Freedom of Speech? Is it free? Should it be? Should hate speech be free? Inflammatory speeches in front of the White House? And what is speech anyway? Is money speech? Violent video games? This course will explore the many legal aspects of the First Amendment Freedom of Speech.

The course will be interactive lecture and discussion. Expect about an hour of reading a week of internet articles.

I teach at Suffolk Law School and have over 30 years’ experience as a lawyer. I previously led a LLAIC study group on James Joyce’s Ulysses and on The Rise of Religion in the Supreme Court, and also led lifelong learning groups elsewhere on Freedom of Speech, Sex, Gender, Bathrooms and the Supreme Court, and The Regulation of Food in the U.S.
